Digital dental restorations: what actually happens after the intraoral scan?

The classic impression with impression material has long ceased to be the only route to a dental restoration. More and more dental practices work with intraoral scanners and transmit the situation in the mouth digitally to the dental laboratory.

For patients, this means above all more comfort. For the practice and the laboratory, however, the digital data set opens up far more possibilities.

From data set to design

At BLANC ET NOBLE, this is where a precise digital workflow begins. The transmitted data is checked and forms the basis for the design at the CAD workstation. Shape, contact points, available space and many other details can be analysed on screen before the actual restoration is produced.

Crowns or bridges in zirconia, for example, are then produced using modern milling technology. Other components and models can be manufactured by 3D printing.

Digital does not automatically mean perfect

The decisive point, however, is this: digital does not automatically mean perfect.

Software and machines provide the tools. Dental technical experience decides how they are used. Especially in aesthetically demanding work, proportions, surface, translucency and the interplay with the natural teeth remain a task for trained eyes and hands.

That is why we do not see digitalisation as a replacement for dental technology – but as a way of making outstanding dental technology even more precise.
